Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on December 9, 2011

Looking for individuals interested in volunteering once a month for stewardship activities at Island Lake Recreation Area.

You will be working with State Park Stewardship Steward Laurel Malvitz in helping to restore native fens, tallgrass prairies, lakeplain prairies, and oak savannas on state park lands and recreation areas.

For more information you can contact Laurel Malvitz by e-mail at MalvitzL@michigan.gov.

Calendar of Volunteer Workdays:
Saturday, January 7, 2012
Island Lake Recreation Area, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
We've been chipping away at the invasive shrubs in this area of the park. We will continue to reconnect parts of this oak barrens ecosystem. Help us by cutting and piling autumn olive, honeysuckle and buckthorn. Meet at the Riverbend Picnic Area parking lot.

Saturday, February 4, 2012
Island Lake Recreation Area, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Lend a hand in restoring an oak barrens by cutting and hauling invasive shrubs. This area should have scattered native trees and shrubs but non-native, invasive shrubs like buckthorn, honeysuckle and autumn olive threaten to shade out the native species. Meet at the Riverbend Picnic Area parking lot.

Saturday, March 3, 2012
Island Lake Recreation Area, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Assist us in clearing out invasive shrubs that could take over this savanna and crowd out native grasses and wildflowers. Meet at the Riverbend Picnic Area park lot.

Some workday activities not suitable for children 12 or under. An adult must accompany children between the ages of 13 to 16 for these volunteer activities.
