Looking for individuals interested in volunteering once a month for stewardship activities at Island Lake Recreation Area. You will be working with State Park Stewardship Steward Laurel Malvitz in helping to restore native fens, tallgrass prairies, lakeplain prairies, and oak savannas on state park lands and recreation areas. Calendar of Volunteer Workdays: Saturday, March 31, 2012 Island Lake Recreation Area, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. If the ground has thawed, we will be pulling garlic mustard. Otherwise we will cut invasive shrubs. Meet at the Riverbend Picnic Area parking lot. Saturday, May 5, 2012 Island Lake Recreation Area, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Help combat the spread of garlic mustard by pulling these weedy plants. Meet at the Riverbend Picnic Area parking lot. Saturday, May 19, 2012 Island Lake Recreation Area, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join Nancy B., a stewardship volunteer, for a morning of fresh air, exercise, and camaraderie. We will be pulling the invasive plant garlic mustard. All hands are welcome! Call Nancy at 248-207-0713 on the work day if the weather is threatening. Meet at the Riverbend Picnic Area parking lot. Saturday, June 9, 2012 Island Lake Recreation Area, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Help us make a push to get as much of the garlic mustard pulled before it goes to seed. We need lots of hands to pull these weedy, invasive plants. Meet at the Riverbend Picnic Area parking lot. Saturday, June 30, 2012 Island Lake Recreation Area, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Help hand pull spotted knapweed, an invasive weed that could take over in this neat prairie remnant. Removing this plant will improve habitat for native species. Please wear long pants and long sleeves as some individuals are sensitive to this plant. Meet at the Dodge picnic area parking lot.
Some workday activities not suitable for children 12 or under. An adult must accompany children between the ages of 13 to 16 for these volunteer activities. This opportunity is sponsored by: DNR, State Park Stewardship Unit
